Kuji Shop is an independent, online boutique showcasing some of the UK’s most talented designers, craft creators and creative businesses all under one roof. Here’s our story:
Plain and simple, we love art, design, fashion, photography, jewellery, good music… Anything that is quality and creative.
Bringing together contemporary jewellery, underground labels, unique clothing ranges and an array of exclusive gifts and products, our aim is to inspire and support emerging artists and designers, both locally in the UK and internationally overseas.
We started up in 2008 as a tiny, family run boutique in Sheffield. A year or so later, things were going well… Well enough for us to expand to a bigger shop anyway. Our lovely new shop was a hub of activity: all sorts of creatives dropping in, new labels wanting to introduce themselves to us, window displays that were designed by different local artists – it was all happening.
Apart from one important thing: Sales were slowing down… The recession was well and truly underway, and we were hit hard. Footfall was down, spending was down and the unique, handmade and one-off products our customers loved were now luxuries. All of this, on top of overheads and increasing rates, meant a decision was made to move solely to online.
The decision to shut the shop in early Summer 2012 was a tough but obvious one. It caused a bit of a stir on our social media channels, and on the blog (that was one of our most read blog posts ever!) and we all got sad for a bit. BUT, and this is a big BUT – every cloud has a silver lining. We’re a sturdy gang and pushed forward to produce a top notch site, fill it with more top notch products and try our best to keep up our top notch customer service – even if it is through the ‘ether’. It still counts, right?
We may have digitised ourselves but our ethos of providing a platform for emerging designers and underground labels that produce quality, ethical and brilliantly unique products, is stronger than ever.
